Polaris slashes ATV prices by half as import from China begins

NAVNIT MOTORS PRIVATE LIMITED
The American manufacturer recently acquired a Chinese ATV manufacturing firm Hammer Head and it will bring the ATV of this brand, as CKD which will reduce the price by half...

US-based ATV (all-terrain vehicle) manufacturer, Polaris has started import of completely knocked down (CKD) ATVs in India and expect the volume to double in a year, Pankaj Dubey, Managing Director, Polaris India told ETAuto in an interview.

The American manufacturer recently acquired a Chinese ATV manufacturing firm Hammer Head and it will bring the ATV of this brand, as CKD which will reduce the price by half.

The Hammer Head ATV is priced at Rs 2.85 lakh compared to the Polaris brand whose price ranges between Rs 5.5 lakh and Rs 30 lakh as they are imported from the US as CBU (Completely Built Unit).
"India is a price sensitive market and we expect that by way of CKD, which attracts lesser duty and the cost production is also lesser, we have lowered the price of the product that will certainly create good volume," Pankaj Dubey told ETAuto.

Polaris has started its CKD unit at Faridabad in Haryana in the same facility where it has ware housing.
The ATV industry in India is still at nascent stage and has very few players in the space. Currently, Polaris is a leading organised player with a market share of about 20% while there are some unorganised players who import ATVs.

Currently the size of the segment is very less at about 1200 units a year but once our global competitors like Honda, Yamaha and others come, the segment will jump to 6000-7000 units a year in the next two years," Pankaj said.

Polaris has mostly sold its product to the experience zones and police forces, para military forces. Since 2013, it has sold about 20 percent of total vehicles to government institutions, which includes police forces of six states and defence sector including BSF.

Polaris, although on a small volume, claimed to have been growing by about 60 percent in the last two years while the overall industry has grown about 20 percent.

Globally the ATV's market is about 10 lakh units and its growth has mellowed down last year, however, before that it was growing at a decent pace. Europe, US and Australia are among the biggest markets for ATVs as in those countries, ATVs are used for agricultural use classified as Tractors. But in India, it is not qualified to be used as tractors.

Polaris India to start full-fledged CKD operations in 3-5 years

NAVNIT MOTORS PRIVATE LIMITED
An off-road track in a 5-acre property in suburban Mumbai called Tao Experiences at Roaring Farms became the 54th 'Polaris Experience Zone' in India on Thursday. Such experience zones offering rides in Polaris All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs)

Such experience zones offering rides in Polaris All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) constitute the largest customer group for Polaris India, followed by individual customers and government establishments.

The ATV market in India, at 1,000-1,200 units a year, is not big yet. Pankaj Dubey, managing director, Polaris India (pictured below), is bullish though that the market will grow significantly in the coming years. And that's when Polaris will invest in a full-fledged CKD assembly facility in India. "For CKD, we think the volumes have to be 2-3 times of what we are doing right now. It seems to me that it will take about 3 years or so of the models that we are getting from US," Dubey told Autocar Professional.

It is to be noted that Polaris India has started assembling a 150cc go-kart like ATV called Hammerhead which it imports from China. Polaris Industries acquired HH Investment, the maker of Hammerhead, last year. This acquisition is aimed at tapping price-sensitive markets like India. The Hammerhead is priced at Rs 2.85 lakh, nearly half of the entry-level price of Polaris' ATV portfolio.

Polaris and Suzuki (which entered the Indian ATV market last year) are the only global brands available here. Growing acceptance of ATVs and entry of more players will provide the economy of scale for Polaris to seriously 'Make in India'. Dubey says, "The industry size of 4,000-5,000 a year is when it would make us an interesting company to invest into this. That is what at the minimum is what we are looking at." The groundwork for the local assembly/production is already happening though. Polaris Industries has an international purchase office (IPO) in Chennai. The vendor base meeting Polaris' global production specifications is "growing". "That will create the future ground for us to get some components also here. It doesn't make sense to import all components and assemble here," says Dubey.

Polaris India has a land parcel of around an acre in Faridabad which houses one of its 3 warehouses and the small facility to assemble the Hammerhead ATV. Fresh investment will be made to set up a plant to locally assemble/produce Polaris models.

Going road legal

ATVs are not road legal in India. A green signal by the government authorities could lead to exponential growth in that market. Polaris has held discussions with government authorities but approval is still some time away. "There have been mixed reactions from the government. There has been no concrete proposal or finalisation. I am hoping that as some point of time they approve that," says Dubey. Polaris being the sole player in the negotiations is not helping much. Entrance of more players into the market and then approaching the government as a group will perhaps make the difference.

Recreation centres

Polaris Entertainment Zones are recreation centres where people come to enjoy the thrill of riding ATVs, according to him. Meant to create demand for its ATVs, they now number 52 across the country through franchisees, each with an investment ranging from Rs.20 lakh to Rs.1.5 crore, mainly in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra and this number is expected to go up to 200 in three years, Mr. Dubey said. Polaris also sells ATVs to the Army and paramilitary forces. The Army has acquired ATVs from Polaris for patrolling in snowy and the border areas.

Last year, the company reported 70 per cent growth in revenue, while its compounded annual growth rate has been over 40 per cent for the last five years.

Polaris expects to manufacture its full range here by 2020, Mr. Dubey said. Meanwhile, the company is expanding its presence in Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan by utilising its learning experience from here.

Polaris bets big on India, begins local assembly of the Hammerhead ATV

NAVNIT MOTORS PRIVATE LIMITED
Polaris India, the wholly-owned subsidiary of the worlds biggest All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) manufacturer Polaris Industries Inc., has started assembling Hammerhead, an off-road go-kart, locally to make it affordable and to meet the growing demand from customers, a top official said.

We have been here in India since 2011 but this is the first time that we have started assembling one of our products. We believe that Hammerhead will have greater demand as prices have come down by 20 per cent following local production, Pankaj Dubey, Managing Director, Polaris India, told The Hindu.

Hammerhead is imported in the Completely Knock Down (CKD) form and then assembled in India at the companys facility in Faridabad.

We started manufacturing last month and going forward, we may add new products depending on more volume. India is a key market for us and we see a long-term future here, Mr. Dubey said.

More coming

Hammerhead will be our No.1 product in ATVs in terms of volume. Once we gain traction, we will get more products to India. We see lot of potential in Hammerhead, Mr. Dubey added.

In a year, around 1,000 ATVs are sold in India and Polaris has a 20 per cent market share. The rest is controlled by unorganised players. With Hammerhead, Polaris expects to corner some market share from unorganised players, he said.

The product has come under the Polaris portfolio following an acquisition in China and is priced at Rs.2.85 lakh. It looks like a go-kart but goes off-road. Most hammerheads will be purchased by Polaris Experience Zones, he said.

Polaris Debuts New All Terrain Vehicle for Expeditionary Forces

NAVNIT MOTORS PRIVATE LIMITED
Polaris Industries recently debuted a new all terrain vehicle for expeditionary forces.
The defense unit of the Medina, Minnesota-based maker of ATVs, snowmobiles and motorcycles unveiled the new MRZR turbo diesel, or MRZR-D, last week at the 2016 Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC), in Tampa.

The four-wheel vehicle can be configured to various passenger configurations (two-, four- and six-person), transported by V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft and powered by diesel or JP8, the jet fuel widely used by the U.S. military and other armed forces around the world.

"The new turbo diesel polaris atv powertrain is significant in reducing the logistics burden for select U.S. services and many foreign militaries that have strict requirements for diesel fuel," Jed Leonard, senior manager at Polaris Defense, said in a statement.

"It could be to conduct peacekeeping, it could be how do you respond to heavy immigration challenges in Europe," he said. "It's really just a symbol of a united front amongst alliances and their partners."

he company made the modifications to its MRZR lineup of vehicles in response to feedback from U.S. Special Operations Command, according to Brendon Reedy, an acquisition program manager at the command.

"We suggested changes to improve sightlines and ergonomics which were incorporated," Reedy said in the statement. "Its nice to see commercial companies such as Polaris continue to invest in the Defense industry and were happy those investments have resulted in a turbo-diesel MRZR."

Other branches of service are familiar with the family of vehicles. For example, hundreds of U.S. Army paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division plan to jump in to Poland next month in part to test how quickly they can move their MRZR all-terrain vehicles out of the drop zone.

The Polaris Turbo diesel versions also available for sale.

82nd Airborne Division - USA Tests New All-Terrain Vehicles in Poland Jump

http://polarismumbai.com
The U.S. Army's 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 82nd Airborne Division will jump into Poland next month in a test of their ability to bolster NATO's eastern flank in a hurry. It will also be a test of the ability of their new all-terrain vehicles to get them quickly out of the drop zone.

Col. Colin Tuley, commander of the 1st BCT, said the jump over Torun, Poland, by a battalion of about 600 of his paratroopers was meant to demonstrate the "readiness and deployability" of the Global Response Force to shore up allies and meet any threat worldwide on quick notice.

Tuley, a veteran of multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq and the former deputy commander of the 75th Ranger Regiment, skirted the question of whether the threat in the particular case of the Swift Response 16 exercise in Poland was Russia.

The goal was to show "really a united front -- for whatever reason," Tuley said in a phone interview from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, home of the 82nd, with Pentagon reporters.
"It could be to conduct peacekeeping, it could be how do you respond to heavy immigration challenges in Europe," he said. "It's really just a symbol of a united front amongst alliances and their partners."

Tuley's battalion will take off from Fort Bragg and rig in the air on the 10-hour flight on June 6, the anniversary of the World War II D-Day landings in Normandy and a hallowed date for the 82nd Division, which helped liberate France.

The troops will be dropping with about 10 of their MRZR all-terrain vehicles made by Minnesota-based Polaris Defense. (MRZR is not an acronym but simply a designator, said a Polaris spokeswoman.)

The four-seat MRZRs were still a "pilot program" for the 82nd but were intended to give the paratroopers more mobility once they hit the ground. "It's a little more robust" than commercial ATVs, Tuley said.

"These vehicles significantly enhance what would otherwise be foot mobility," Brig. Gen. Brian Winski, deputy commander of the 82nd Airborne, told Bloomberg News. "They change the dynamic and turn what would have been a three-mile per hour operation into a 50-mile per hour operation."

"Swift Response will demonstrate the allies' ability to respond to a crisis scenario from staging bases in both Europe and the U.S. within 18 hours of notification," the Army said in a statement.

The exercise, which will run from May 27 to June 26, will include more than 5,000 soldiers and airmen from Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and the United States, and will take place in Poland and Germany.

On the jump into Poland, the 1st BCT troops will be joined by about 1,000 paratroopers from the British 16 Air Assault Brigade and the Polish 6th Airborne Brigade. At the same time, the Europe-based 173rd Airborne Brigade will deploy from staging bases in Germany to conduct airborne assaults onto training areas in northern Poland.

The second phase of Swift Response 16 will take place in Germany at the U.S. Army's Grafenwoehr and Hohenfels Training Areas, and will include another Joint Forcible Entry airdrop.

Off-road Vehicles in India

http://polarismumbai.com

The genre of extreme adventure sports is steadily catching up in India. People are no more just satisfied with seeing dirt bike racing on screens, they want to participate and feel it for real. As a result, there has been an ascent in the organization of sporting activities by motor manufacturers as well as enthusiast groups in different parts of the country. And not only that, various international off-road vehicle dealers have set up shop in India to cater to the growing culture of off-road adventure biking.
If we look at the types of off road vehicles available in India, then there are basically two types: terrain-specific and those that can be used commonly.

Buy Polaris ATV India

Terrain-specific vehicles include dune buggies, sand rails, monster trucks, rock crawlers, snow mobiles, hover crafts, dual-terrain vehicles, and military vehicles. Common ones include dirt bikes, quad bikes, 4-wheel drive trucks, sports utility vehicles, and off-highway vehicles that include all-terrain vehicles and utility-terrain vehicles.

Off-road vehicles have more ground clearance than vehicles for paved surfaces so that they can easily transverse obstacles likes rocks, plants, and debris. They have soft suspension and wide tyres to achieve small ground pressure so that they dont sink into soft surfaces like mud or sand. They are equipped with low-gearing system to help them cover rough terrains while making the best use of available power. The vehicles meant for slippery surfaces have four-wheel or all-wheel drive system for easy traction.

If you wish to buy a small off-road vehicle in India, theres no prescribed license or registration that you have to secure. Despite that, our Polaris ATV Showroom in Mumbai, Bangalore provide financial assistance as well as insurance cover through their tie-ups with bank and insurance companies.
